Lab mouse statue – A monument to honor their contribution to science

The Institute of Cytology and Genetics in Novosibirsk, Russia, installed a lab mouse statue to recognize the sacrifices made by lab rats for clinical research. The eight-foot statue of the lab mouse knitting a strand of DNA is installed to honor their contributions in the advancement of scientific research.

Rodents like rats and mice are useful subjects for medical testing and research. That is because their biological, genetic and behavioral characteristics are similar to those of humans. Moreover, they respond faster to changes, which reduces the time required for conducting tests. There are other species that might be closer to humans in these areas. But mice are easier to breed and maintain.
